Stop the cars “like rockets” in via Sulcis in Sassari. After the death last week of Giovanni Spano, a 60-year-old resident in the area who was hit by a car on October 28, the residents are uniting with a petition that has now reached 500 signatures.
"We are asking the Municipality - says Rita Porto, a shopkeeper on the street - for speed bumps and 30 zones. Anyone who crosses here always risks being hit in full". The long straight road that starts from Ponte Nuovo, on one side, or from via Manzoni on the other, leads drivers to forget about the brake. "Over the years the situation has gotten much worse and we are really afraid".
The context is also made more dangerous by the large number of elderly people and children crossing the street, as well as the presence of three schools, including nursery and middle school. "It's one of the few neighborhoods," explains Claudia Pipia, who runs a stationery shop, "where many children still roam. We have to protect them." The owner of the shop rushed to the scene immediately after the accident almost a month ago. "We are still upset, the man had almost reached the sidewalk."
Meanwhile, residents continue to sign the petition in the various commercial establishments of the street until it is delivered to the Municipality with the request for an intervention. At the height of the place where Spano was hit by the car, a bouquet of flowers is visible in memory of a victim of the road, hoping that it will be the last.
