The car suddenly pulls alongside, some rifle shots are fired from the passenger seat, the targeted vehicle ends up off the road. Then the escape. And the arrival of the police.
It was the soldiers from the Sardara station, together with their colleagues from San Gavino Monreale and from the Operational Unit of the Villacidro Company and the Cagliari Investigation Unit, who reconstructed what happened yesterday morning on the Sp 62 in the Sardara-San Gavino Monreale section. The investigations concluded with an arrest for attempted murder: Mattia Onali, a 39-year-old haulier from Sardara, ended up in handcuffs. His wife, a 34-year-old housewife, was also reported: she was there, pregnant, driving the car from which the shots were fired.
The Carabinieri operation started from the serious episode that occurred yesterday morning: a 68-year-old farmer from Sardinia called 112 to say that while he was in his car together with his wife, on the Sp 62, a gray vehicle, a 'Alfa 156 Sw, with two people on board, fired at them. He and his wife were pulled alongside and overtaken and, during the maneuver at breakneck speed, the passenger fired multiple shots. The left rear window was shattered and the windshield and roof were also damaged. The farmer swerved off the road to avoid the rain of lead.
The attackers' car continued its journey.
The carabinieri, having arrived on site, saw the victims' Fiat Multipla riddled with bullets: the occupants were only slightly injured, hit by shards of glass. They immediately pointed the finger at the alleged perpetrator: Onali, their neighbor.
Immediate searches made it possible to identify the material perpetrator of the attack. The motive? From the statements emerged a family "feud" full of spite and antipathy that had been going on for years, culminating, before the shooting, with the damage to some bales of hay: Onali held his rival responsible.
The alibi provided by the thirty-nine year old did not hold up and in the end, after admitting his responsibilities, he indicated to the police where the rifle, a 12 gauge sawn-off shotgun from B. Rizzini which had never been registered, had been hidden. During the search, the veil was then lifted on the mystery of the driver, who was hypothesized to be the 34-year-old wife of the lorry driver.
Both vehicles involved, together with the rifle used in the attack and the clothes worn by the arrested person, were seized for further technical investigations. The arrested man was taken to cell in Uta.
