Recovery operations of the wreck of the yacht Atina , which sank and was devoured by flames on the evening of 10 August, will begin next week , weather permitting.

The pontoon “Mb1 Conquest”, also used for the wreck of the Costa Concordia, arrived in Olbia directly from the far eastern Mediterranean and will continue operations for approximately four days.

Around fifty operators from different companies were involved, with a lot of local manpower and one company, SeaBig, officially charged with completing the work.

Procedures for the removal of the diesel fuel contained in the tanks of the 47-metre long vessel owned by a luxury charter company flying the Cook Islands flag had already begun on 28 August: over 30 thousand litres were recovered, averting the risk of environmental and marine damage.

All that remains now is the recovery of what remains of the vessel which, on the evening of San Lorenzo, was off the beach on the Olbia coast, engaged in a private cruise with eight people on board , all rescued by other boaters who witnessed the fire and provided first aid.

The wreck of the yacht, estimated to be worth 16 million euros, will be brought back to shore at the expense of the insurance, whose policy is around 21 million. The entire operation has been estimated at tens of millions of euros.

The recovery technique is similar to that used for the Costa Concordia : the Atina yacht is on a 6/8 metre seabed lying on its side and must first be righted. These are delicate operations because the wreck is very damaged and will be harnessed and hoisted onto the pontoon .
