He is sorry, he apologized to the 118 operator and the Carabinieri for the attack . But James Timothy, the 23-year-old Nigerian arrested on Saturday for assault and resisting arrest, cannot explain the reasons why he stripped naked in the square .
The young man, assisted by the lawyer Gianfranco Congiu, appeared before the judge Serena Corrias for the validation of the arrest; house arrest was granted pending the direct trial scheduled for Friday. In court the boy, in Italy for 6 years, admitted to having drunk a few beers but does not remember what happened between via Garibaldi and piazza Roma .
The facts were reconstructed by the prosecutor Valerio Bagattini who recalled how James Timothy was in the company of a friend on Saturday night, with whom he shared an apartment in the Sant'Efisio neighborhood. It is not clear whether the two had argued, but they certainly made a lot of noise with shouts and shouts until that striptease in front of everyone .
When the carabinieri arrived, the young man was still in a frenzy and so the soldiers called for an ambulance to try to restore calm. Instead, it was chaos: Timothy lunged at a Lavos operator, grabbed her by the neck and violently pulled her . The carabinieri intervened in force to defend her and in those tense moments , a soldier was also injured .
The prosecutor requested a precautionary measure, highlighting that even if the young man has a regular job when he is under the influence of alcohol he can be dangerous . The defense reserved further investigation, underlining the behavior of the boy who apologized in court and has no criminal record. The direct trial is on Friday.
