The tragedy occurred as they were leaving mass, a few meters from the church of Santa Maria Bambina where Rita Secchi , well known in Sassari for having been the owner of a butcher's shop in via Cesaraccio for a long time, went every evening to follow the celebration. She was crossing on the crosswalk arm in arm with a friend when the two women were mowed down by a car driven by a 24-year-old : a terrible crash, which left no escape for the 76-year-old . The friend , a 90-year-old who lives in the nearby via Monteverdi, rolled onto the hood and was carried for over 40 meters by the driver before he stopped : taken to hospital, she is in serious condition.

A very loud bang, which brought many people outside the church, and among the first to rush there was the parish priest, Don Nicola Carta . " Everyone was screaming, it was terrible ," witnesses reported. And there is dismay and anger among the inhabitants of the Santa Maria di Pisa neighborhood: "Every day we risk our lives," they protest, "the cars arrive at full speed." "Furthermore," the parish priest continues, "you can hardly see. It's a dangerous situation."
