Moments of fear in Palermo where last night the elevator ropes of a two-story building broke . The people inside fell down . The toll is five injured, two women and three children. A woman is in serious condition, taken in red code to the Civico hospital with injuries to her legs . The others, whose conditions are said to be less serious, were taken to the Cervello hospital.
According to an initial reconstruction, the elevator was handcrafted by a member of the family who is a blacksmith by profession. It was used to go up and down the house, since the building has no internal staircase. Perhaps because of the weight that exceeded the maximum permitted , the cables that supported the platform could not hold up and broke. Another man was helped down by the firefighters with the help of a ladder because he was stuck on the first floor due to the broken freight elevator. He is said to be the blacksmith who built the elevator, as he told the police.
Firefighters and numerous ambulances intervened on the scene to assist the injured. Investigations are underway by the State Police to ascertain the causes of the accident.
