"A wait of two, three hours, would even be normal by now, but arriving - as is happening these days and since the beginning of the summer - to 10 hours or more, is not conceivable even for a white or green code, there is a limit to everything ", says Mario Vicentini, president of Alba, the 118 association. "The alarm is valid for all the Emergency Rooms on the Island, those that remain open: the sacrifices and the self-denial of the staff are debased by a system that is completely collapsing".

The emergency-urgency is in a tailspin. Ferragosto is over, but things are going from bad to worse. Record influxes to the facilities, also because medical guards and basic assistance are often lacking; staff are undersized and exhausted.

It also happens that the air conditioning does not work ; there are no beds available and the ambulance stretchers are "seized" and, as a result, become unusable.
