The railway connection with hydrogen trains linking Alghero and Sassari-Sorso and Alghero-Fertilia airport “Riviera del Corallo”, a 140 million euro project by the Region and Arst, is at the centre of public debate and following the requests of the mayor of Alghero Raimondo Cacciotto who moved the date for observations to 15 November.

In addition to doubts about the route, which is "particularly invasive in some sections", the mayor of Alghero stressed the creation of a transport system for North West Sardinia that has provincial direction and can be decisive in connecting the territories of the vast area.

«We hope - said Raimondo Cacciotto - that we will soon arrive at the definition of a sustainable mobility plan, on a metropolitan scale, which incorporates the suggestions and real needs of the territory».

The meeting was attended by the municipal administration, the regional councillor for Transport Barbara Manca, the regional councillor for Public Works Antonio Piu, the regional councillors Di Nolfo and Spano, the councillor of the Municipality of Alghero Roberto Corbia, the deputy mayor of Sassari Salvatore Dau, technicians and managers of ARST, of the regional structure and the representatives of the Municipalities of Sassari and Sorso.

"The method of participation is the basis of our administration and this is why we will always seek discussion with citizens, to avoid that in the future other projects are perceived by our fellow citizens as "imposed from above". In this specific case it is a project that started a long time ago and that had the endorsement of the mayors and the regional administration that preceded us; it is a project on which it is undoubtedly necessary to discuss, I am referring for example to the failure to present the timetable, to understand the actual times of realization, a comparative evaluation of the technological choice, in this case hydrogen, and the impact it would have on the companies in the area".

The administrative process of the project is at a very advanced stage, but the Municipality of Alghero has requested a 30-day extension of the deadline to allow citizens to submit written comments, effectively moving the deadline to November 15.

"I invite citizens to send specific observations and address them, in addition to ARST and the Region, also to the Municipality. That proposal is an extemporaneous project," added the mayor, "which in no way completes an overall reasoning that we need. We hope that we will soon arrive at the definition of a sustainable mobility plan, on a metropolitan scale, which incorporates the suggestions and real needs of the territory."
