The day after the collapse, safety measures began on the historic walls of Cagliari, in the stretch of Via Fiume, which was closed to traffic yesterday to ensure public safety after the collapse of some large stones.
The work in progress, which is expected to be completed within a few days, has as its primary goal the reopening of the road, an important arterial road that connects the upper part of Stampace with Viale Buoncammino, a hub for many areas of the city.
However, the intervention will not be limited to this stretch, but will also extend to the access to the Castello district, an area that has been cordoned off for several years. The first works include the demolition of the concrete block wall, which was built in the past to protect from debris, and the dismantling of the unsafe parts, with the conservation of the material for future restorations. Further activities will include the elimination of the cement plasters of the parapet, which are in the process of detaching and represent an additional risk. These interventions are part of a broader plan to restore the walls of the Castello district, currently being planned. In addition to Via Fiume, the walls in front of the Cammino Nuovo car parks and those near the Torre dell'Elefante, further symbols of Cagliari's history, will also be made safe.
"Yesterday morning, as soon as we realized that part of the walls in Via Fiume had collapsed, we closed the street to traffic and this morning we promptly started the safety works", explains Mayor Massimo Zedda, "These, in a few days, will determine both the reopening of the affected street, and the repair of the other part of the walls that had been cordoned off for years. The works were carried out in agreement with the Superintendence, which allowed us to intervene quickly, recognizing the urgency of the case". Furthermore, the mayor announced that work will also be carried out on the entrance to the Castello district in Via Dei Genovesi, with the "restoration of two-way traffic, which has been obstructed for years due to collapses, and blocked by barriers".
