The Psychiatry Department of San Giovanni di Dio , directed by Professor Federica Pinna, is at the forefront of the prevention and treatment of the main mental disorders.
On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, Thursday, October 10, citizens can call the number 3514009344, from 10 am to 6 pm, to get answers on the main topics of mental health and on the criteria and methods of taking charge of patients in Mental Health Services. Furthermore, to turn the spotlight even more on the issue, San Giovanni di Dio will be colored green all night.
It is estimated that one in eight people worldwide has a mental health problem, mostly anxiety and depression. In most cases, sufferers do not receive care and assistance services, with negative consequences on physical health, family and interpersonal relationships.
In Sardinia, the number of users who turn to specialized public facilities is minimal despite the fact that the Island has the worst prevalence data on "significant and long-lasting depressive symptoms" in Italy.
"The factors underlying the low attractiveness of mental health services, especially if public, and, in general, the low adherence to psychiatric care, are many - explains Professor Pinna - among these the stigma, therefore the fear of being labeled as 'mentally ill', has always weighed on access to psychiatric care. A strategic plan of analysis and intervention on risk factors and factors that hinder access to mental health care is necessary and urgent".
