"Reading the messages published today in the newspaper Domani cannot but cause deep dismay. These revelations confirm what I have denounced from the beginning and what, to a large extent, the trial has already demonstrated. Only questionable choices adopted by the Court, at the request of the Office of the Promoter of Justice, have allowed these conversations to remain secret."

This is what Cardinal Angelo Becciu stated in reaction to the publication by “Domani” of the chats (so far omitted by Vatican magistrates) between the lobbyist Francesca Immacolata Chaouqui and the associate of Msgr. Alberto Perlasca, Genoveffa Ciferri , in which Chaouqui anticipates details of the investigation and interrogations .

"From the very first moment I spoke of a plot against me - Becciu declared in a note -: an investigation built on falsehoods, which five years ago unjustly devastated my life and exposed me to a pillory of global proportions. Now, finally, I hope that the time of deception has come to an end".

"As one of the reported messages reads: 'If they find out that we were all in agreement, it's over.' A sentence that, in itself, is more than eloquent," continues the cardinal, who is awaiting the appeal of the trial on the management of the Holy See's funds next autumn after being sentenced in the first instance to five years and six months in prison.

"Since this morning," he adds, "many people have been contacting me, outraged and scandalized, after reading these additional messages." "There remains a deep bitterness in noting that individuals capable of such nefarious acts against a Cardinal - or indifferent to them - continue to hold prestigious roles in the Vatican," he adds. "I have already given my lawyers, Fabio Viglione and Maria Concetta Marzo, a mandate to undertake all necessary legal action to shed full light on such disconcerting conduct, which has nothing to do with the search for the truth," concludes Becciu.
