Fear aboard the Moby ship “Ale Due” in service on the Porto Torres-Genoa line . The ferry that had left the port of Porto Torres at 8:30 pm on Thursday 19 December, after about two hours of travel had to turn back due to a small fire that broke out in the garage compartment, caused by a refrigerated truck engine .
The smoke started from deck three and spread to the cabins. The change of course was decided when the ship was already seven miles away from the port of Turritano. On board 268 passengers were invited to gather in the bar room, in the safety zone . The fire was put out by the firefighting teams.
The captain, after reassuring everyone, decided to turn back before even tackling the Strait of Bonifacio, and to change course, passing along the coast of Castelsardo . The Moby "Ale Due" docked at around 11:30 pm in the industrial dock on the Asi 2 quay, where the fire brigade arrived for a thorough inspection and to secure the ship, which had remained stranded in the port during the night.
Also on board were the personnel of the Port Authority and the commander Giuseppe Cannarile. This morning the Tirrenia-Moby company made shuttles available to accompany passengers without vehicles to the port of Olbia , where the Moby Tommy, which had left for Genoa, was waiting for them.
