«The inclusion of the principle of insularity in the Constitution and the birth of the parliamentary commission to combat the disadvantages deriving from insularity was not followed by a concerted commitment on the part of the Government to eliminate the gap between insular regions and the central state and Europe».

This was said by the members of the Bicameral Insularity Commission of the Democratic Party Marco Meloni, Antonio Nicita (PD group leader of the Insularity Commission) and Silvio Lai (vice president of the Insularity Commission) who have drawn up a bill proposal for the application of the Insularity Principle, filed in the Senate by Meloni and Nicita for the start of the legislative process.

«Living on an island, taking care of yourself, working, doing business, having the need to travel to and from the peninsula poses significant obstacles for islanders. A natural, serious and permanent disadvantage that prevents those living in our islands from being able to compete on equal terms with their continental compatriots", say the parliamentarians. «The inclusion of the principle of insularity in the Constitution and the birth of the Parliamentary Commission to combat the disadvantages deriving from insularity was not followed by a commitment on the part of the Government to eliminate the gap between insular regions and the central State and Europe», they continue the parliamentarians.

Regarding education, Meloni recalls recent episodes, such as the failure to approve the amendments to reduce the impact on the islands of the rules on school sizing and the strong penalization suffered by Sardinian teachers for the 2024 school competition: «Incomprehensible choices like those of the venues for competitions in locations not directly connected to Sardinia confirm the government's inability to remove the disadvantages deriving from insular factors".

Senators Meloni and Nicita and deputy Lai appeal to their island colleagues in Parliament: «We turn to our island colleagues who are part of the majority: let's make this battle our own to put into practice what is foreseen by our Constitution. Let's work together to give all our citizens the same rights and to overcome territorial barriers."
