The candidates for the office of mayor of Cagliari rise to five. With the elections scheduled for 8 and 9 June, the name of Claudia Ortu appears, supported by Potere al Popolo and PCI united in the Cagliari Popolare-alternative class list.

To present the list, at least 350 signatures are needed but, net of recounts, the objective would have already been achieved. A 47-year-old English linguistics researcher at the University of Cagliari, she is a freelance journalist and this is not her first political experience: in fact, she was a popular candidate in the 2022 political elections in the single-member constituency. «We take the field to take a stand for one of the parts of society which is the working class, which no one fully represents – explained the candidate – we differ in this from all the other candidacies which are by necessity broad and inter-classist. Ours is a radical and not a compromise candidacy."

Regarding the projects for Cagliari, Ortu explains that he would like a city «in which the disastrous path of tourist monoculture is abandoned, which is one of the sources of income but cannot be the only one. Cagliari is not Disneyland and residents need to return to the historic districts, where there are fewer and fewer inhabitants to make room for tourist accommodation." According to the candidate for mayor, "Cagliari must have a vital and lively economy" where small shops must be reborn and craftsmanship resume, compared to the spread of large shopping centers and therefore "bring people back to live in the historic districts".

In her Cagliari, Claudia Ortu would like to «eliminate the greatest number of private cars by radically strengthening public transport: the ecological transition is not achieved by converting the private car fleet from petrol to electric, but transport from private to public». Finally, in the Cagliari Popolare program the «progressive internalization of servants who are assigned to various contracts: the workers, even those of the concessionary companies and cooperatives, must be paid at least 10 euros gross per hour». And also the Palestinian issue: «We will ensure that Cagliari joins the boycott on Israeli companies and institutions and that it is twinned with the city of Jenin in the West Bank, where the devastation is most evident».
